Grid'5000 Large Scale Deployment Challenge: results

For the first time, Grid'5000 users were invited this year to take part in a challenge to showcase tools and environments demonstrating the deployment of distributed or Grid middleware on Grid'5000. Teams were expected to demonstrate their know-how in the deployment of Grid (Glite, XtreemOS, Globus to name a few) or Cloud middleware. Participants were evaluated according to the following criteria:

  1. Deployment time, and number of sites and nodes deployed
  2. Complexity of the deployed middleware, and realism of Grid'5000 usage scenario for this middleware
  3. Ease of deployment by other users (documentation and script repository availability)
  4. Interest of the deployed middleware for the community
  5. Elegance of the solution

The Grid'5000 Spring School challenge winner is Pierre Riteau, who demonstrated the deployment of a sky computing environment based on nimbus in 31mn !
The runner-up is Marko Obrovac, who demonstrated scripts enabling the deployment of XtreemOS on Grid'5000. The script brought up an linux-ssi favour version of XtreemOS putting a virtual SMP of 156 processors online in less than 30mn.
Each win an ipod touch for their entry.

XtreemOS summer school 2010

Filed Under:

Registration is now open!

We are organizing a second XtreemOS summer school in Reisensburg Castle,  Science Center of Ulm University, in Günzburg near Ulm, Germany from July 5th to 9th 2010.

Registration is now open!

The XtreemOS Summer School will include lectures on modern distributed paradigms such as Grid computing, Cloud computing, and network-centric operating systems. The Summer School will combine lectures from research leaders shaping the future of distributed systems and world leaders in deploying and exploiting distributed infrastructures. Hands-on laboratory exercises and practical sessions using XtreemOS will give participants experience on using modern distributed systems.

The aims of the XtreemOS Summer School are:

  • To introduce participants to emergent computing paradigms such as Grid computing and Cloud computing,
  • To provide lectures and practical courses on novel techniques to achieve scalability, highly availability and security in distributed systems,
  • To present Grid applications in the domains of E-science and business.
  • To provide a forum for participants to discuss your research work and share experience with experience researchers.

The school is open to postgraduate level students (MSc, PhD) and young researchers (from technical industries, research laboratories, and academic environments) who have recently started (or are about to start) working on grid research projects. Prospective students from computer science, computational science and application backgrounds will be encouraged to apply; Basic knowledge in distributed systems is the only prerequisite. Grid newcomers and beginners are welcome, but people already involved in grid projects should also benefit from this school.

HPC center Pisa workshops: XtreemOS for providing HPC services

Filed Under:

The use of XtreemOS on top of Grid and Cloud computing resources will be the topic of the upcoming workshop "X-HPC, XtreemOS for providing HPC services", hosted at the Department of Computer Science by the new-born HPC center of the University of Pisa.

The HPC center of the University of Pisa experiments with the latest and bleeding edge technology in hardware and software, like GPGPU technologies on ATI and NVIDIAdevices, and has been nominated the first ACER HPC competence center in Europe.

The X-HPC workshop will be held in Pisa, on Wednesday 16 June, in the Gerace room at the Computer Science Department of the University. Several industrial partners of the XtreemOS consortium and of the HPC center, like Kerlabs and Ferrari Racing Division, will join the event to provide their unique expertise and viewpoint. The workshop will showcase the latest XtreemOS LINUX distribution, which is currently under testing and evaluation on top of a network of computing resources provided by the Pisa HPC center, by INRIA, the Aladdin/G5K project, CNR and several other partner institutions of the XtreemOS consortium across all Europe.

XtreemOS Mobile Device flavour at EuroSys 2010

Alvaro Martinez Reol (TID) presented the XtreemOS MD flavour during the EuroSys 2010 conference (Paris, France) with a poster, demo and stand.

EuroSys 2010 - MD flavour

About 30 people came and visited the stand and both the poster and demo were explained directly to around 15. Conference delegates stopping at the XtreemOS stand seemed to be quite interested, not only in the MD part, but also in learning more about XtreemOS as a whole and about specific XtremOS components (XtreemFS, XtreemOS cluster flavour, use cases...).

Other visitors showed interest in XtreemOS and its possible advantages compared to other Grid solutions while others came to see the poster and GridPlayer video after they participated in the XtreemOS tutorial session.

Feedback on the XtreemOS tutorial given at Eurosys 2010

Filed Under:

The XtreemOS tutorial given at EuroSys 2010 consisted of three parts. The first part, presented by Guillaume Pierre (VUA), gave an overview of the system and of its architecture, introducing the VO management model, XtreemFS and the Application Execution Management system. The second part focused on the usage of XtreemOS, showing how the command-line and GUI tools can be used to execute applications and  to store data in a distributed fashion; the speaker for this part was Corina Stratan (VUA).  In the last part of the tutorial, Massimo Coppola (CNR) presented concepts related to the administration and security of XtreemOS, and explained how resources and Virtual Organizations can be managed.

EuroSys 2010 - tutorial (1)     EuroSys 2010 - tutorial (2)

The tutorial had approximately 25 participants, and some of them were interested in learning more about XtreemOS. From the questions asked during the tutorial, and also from the discussions that we had after the tutorial with some of the participants,  the aspects of interest were:
- what modules are needed by the XtreemOS kernel, and if there are any requirements for the other XtreemOS components
- if it is possible to package the XtreemOS components for other Linux distributions
- if it is possible to use XtreemOS with a custom job scheduler
- more details about the implementation of the XtreemOS components
- what are the applications used on top of XtreemOS
- in the case when a resource belongs to multiple VOs, how are the multiple certificates managed
- when a user submits a job, how does the system find resources that meet the requirements and that also allow the user to run applications

XtreemFS update 1.2.1

Filed Under:
XtreemFS team has just released an update for XtreemFS (version 1.2.1). This version contains mainly bug fixes, e.g. for FreeBSD and Fedora 12, and enhanced replica management. The new scrubber will automatically replace failed replicas.

Source code and packages are available for download on http://www.xtreemfs.org.

There is no change in the database or OSD storage, so an update from 1.2 should work out of the box. The usual advice: backup important data before upgrading.

Luscious Lebkuchen: XtreemFS 1.2 now available

Filed Under:

XtreemFS 1.2 ("Luscious Lebkuchen") is now available at http://www.xtreemfs.org.

New features:
  • asynchronous MRC database backups (database dumps are created in the background)
  • new GRID SSL mode: SSL is used for authentication only, data is transferred via plain TCP for a better performance
  • Vivaldi-based replica selection and placement
  • MRC and OSD wait and retry for a configurable time span if they cannot reach the DIR on startup
  • faster file copying of files with 'cp' (by providing correct values for 'st_blksize' with 'getattr')
  • additional binaries with standard Unix names (mount.xtreemfs, mkfs.xtreemfs, lsfs.xtreemfs, rmfs.xtreemfs)
  • experimental Hadoop file system driver for XtreemFS
  • web-based admin console
We also fixed most of the bugs recorded in the tracker.

When upgrading your XtreemFS installation from 1.1 to 1.2, MRC and DIR databases should be converted automatically, without the need for human intervention. However, for safety reasons, we suggest to create an XML dump with the old release before updating; see "Updating" section in the XtreemFS FAQs (http://www.xtreemfs.org/faq.php).
