Winners of our XtreemOS challenge

We are pleased to announce the final results of the challenge.

The selection committee unanimously voted for:

  •  Monte Carlo Simulation for Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography with XtreemOS by Emanuele Carlini, Sebnem Erturk & Giacomo Righetti from University of Pisa, Italy,  as the winners and the recipients of the first prize.

The other two finalists are

  • Grid Security Operation Center by Syed Raheel Hasan, Jasmina Pazardzievska, Maxime Syrame (supervised by Julien Bourgeois) from Laboratoire Informatique, Université de Franche-Comté, France, (2nd prize) and,
  • Parallel Kriging by Alvaro Parra, Exequiel Sepulveda & Felipe Lema from ALGES lab at Universidad de Chile.

Summary of the work carried out by Emanuele Carlini, Sebnem Erturk & Giacomo Righetti:

- Monte Carlo Simulation for Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography with XtreemOS

"Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is an imaging technique for the in vivo volumetric analysis of the distributions of radiopharmaceuticals. Our project focused on a Monte Carlo simulations of SPECT, which is composed by CPU-intensive tasks that take up to several days or months to complete even with state-of-the-art single-CPU computers
We adapted the job submission to the status of the platform in order to meet a target completion deadline, by tuning the number of machines at runtime, requiring more and/or faster machines whenever necessary, or, conversely, releasing heavy-loaded machines whenever they represent a bottleneck. XtreemOS offered us a number of tools and features which have been attractive in order to complete such goal. Besides the global security and authentication capabilities, we
specifically rely on the job deployment features of XtreemOS."

Winners of our XtreemOS challenge

Summary of the work carried out by Syed Raheel Hasan, Jasmina Pazardzievska, Maxime Syrame:

- "At present grid networks are working with very trusted sites. They share limited number of resources but the trend of interconnecting different grids is evolving with the passage of time. Specially by the innovation of desktop grids the risk is very high that grid networks will also be attacked like Brute force attack, Denial of Service attack(DoS) or Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS) etc. Grid Security Operation Center (GSOC) is the modern security operation center specific to counter these problems in grid computing networks."

Challenge - 2nd rank

Summary of the work carried out by Alvaro Parra, Exequiel Sepulveda & Felipe Lema

- "The intended application to run over XtreemOS is the parallel kriging implementation developed in C++. The current implementation is a multi process program where all parameters and options can be configured in a XML file. Output is a file containing the variable estimations of all defined nodes. The motivation is to run the application over the Grid5000 platform and make large scale experiments in order to make performance comparisons and measure scalability of the system. We want to measure what is the larger dimensionality that we can reach using this technology."

XtreemOS Mobile Device flavour at EuroSys 2010

Alvaro Martinez Reol (TID) presented the XtreemOS MD flavour during the EuroSys 2010 conference (Paris, France) with a poster, demo and stand.

EuroSys 2010 - MD flavour

About 30 people came and visited the stand and both the poster and demo were explained directly to around 15. Conference delegates stopping at the XtreemOS stand seemed to be quite interested, not only in the MD part, but also in learning more about XtreemOS as a whole and about specific XtremOS components (XtreemFS, XtreemOS cluster flavour, use cases...).

Other visitors showed interest in XtreemOS and its possible advantages compared to other Grid solutions while others came to see the poster and GridPlayer video after they participated in the XtreemOS tutorial session.

XtreemOS at Poslovna Linux Konferenca

Poslovna Linux konferenca (Business Linux Conference) is an annual event in Slovenia, focussing on the use of Linux and other open-source software in business environments.  This year  the conference took place in Portorož on the 28th and 29th of September.

XtreemOS was presented by Marjan Šterk and Matej Artač (both from XLAB) as a platform for collaboration both within companies and across company borders. A potential use case in an architectural bureau was used to enumerate the most important features of XtreemOS in businesses: sharing files with XtreemFS, exploiting grid resources for automatic compilation of project documentation, marketing material, animations etc, and use of applications installed on remote computers without the need for local user accounts. A simplified live demonstration of these features was also shown.

Release 1.0 of XtreemFS

XtreemFS 1.0 is out. XtreemFS now supports read-only replication with failover, data center replica maps, parallel reads and writes, and a native Windows client, among other new features.

Download it at xtreemfs.org.

Watch our demo of replication and failover on youtube!

We demonstrate the XtreemFS replication and failover with an unmodified MPlayer. We play a regular movie file stored on two XtreemFS OSDs.

XtreemOS at Libre Software Meeting (RMLL'09)

Rencontres Mondiales du Logiciel Libre 2009 in Nantes, France

In 2009, LSM took place between July 7th and July 11th in Nantes, France ! An event managed by the Linux-Nantes Association, with active support from Free, Libre and Open Source Software users’ associations from the whole country.

On July 8th 2009, Surbhi Chitre of INRIA, Rennes gave a talk at RMLL'09 Nantes on OpenVZ integration in XtreemOS. She explained the need of XtreemOS, its importance as a solution to make grids easy and also the features that XtreemOS offered along with why and how it was new.

She illustrated her design of OpenVZ integration in XtreemOS, the difficulties in doing so and why OpenVZ was chosen for integration in XtreemOS.

Surbhi's presentation slides are available here.

Presentation of XtreemOS in Kiberpipa, Ljubljana, Slovenia

On April 14th XLAB made an XtreemOS training session in the Kiberpipa slot. Marjan Sterk and Matej Artač presented the XtreemOS project and its goals, and demonstrated its usage from the perspective of a VO administrator, a resource administrator, and a VO user.

The audience consisted of Linux users, who showed interest in the project's results.

Kiberpipa - Xlab

The video of the presentation (in Slovenian) is available here.

(Source: wikipedia) -  Kiberpipa ('Cyberpipe') is a hackerspace in Ljubljana, Slovenia, established in 2001 as a part of the K6/4 Institute.

The hackerspace operates as a cultural centre, computer laboratory and Internet café (with free wireless access). Kiberpipa engages primarily in open source programming and the recycling of computer devices.
It organises workshops, lectures, and entertainment and information events.
